Messi ends Argentina title drought with Copa America triumph

Albiceleste beat Brazil 1-0 in the final at the Maracana

A thunderous header by Nicolas Otamendi saw Argentina win a physical clash at the Maracana with rivals Brazil keeping the Albiceleste waiting until the final minutes of the game.

The win marked Argentina's first major international title since 1993 and gave Lionel Messi his first major trophy with the national team.

The game was delayed for over an hour due to fan violence outside the stadium, but once it got underway, it was a tense and tight affair.

Brazil had the better of the chances in the first half, but Argentina came out stronger after the break and deservedly took the lead through Otamendi's header.

Brazil pushed for an equaliser, but Argentina held on to secure the victory.

The win was a major triumph for Argentina and for Messi, who had been under pressure to deliver a trophy for his country.

It was also a disappointing night for Brazil, who had been hoping to win their first Copa America title since 2007.
